Blogging in Phys Ed
I have numerous ideas for the use of a blog in my middle school physical education classes. One idea I have is using the blog as an extension of what we are covering in class activities. The blog can showcase classroom activities with pictures and descriptions of students participating in class. It can also be used to increase parents and students awareness of each units learning objectives, what classroom expectations are, and what we will be covering throughout the school year. I will have the opportunity to post my Physical Education students of the month and keep parents informed of all of the positive experiences we have in class. My students can make suggestions for daily warm-ups and explain why they feel that their particular warm-up would be good for our class. I feel that this blog can be used as another resource to increase student interaction and keep them motivated to keep up the good work!

Mike,
ReplyDeleteI guess I had not thought about the potential that a blog can have for parents and other family members, not just for the students. I think that is a great idea to include videos and pictures of class activities so that an image can coincide with the details that excited students are bringing home to their parents.
The warm up idea is pretty strong as well, because you can be prepared and they will know what to expect when they enter the class. I do not forsee any issues with implimenting such concepts into a blog. To have them explain their reason for a warm-up is a great extension of literary components that often get lost in our content area.
Do you think enough students would have access to the blogs? I would think most do and more will in years to come, but I know it can be ardous for some students.
Mike-
ReplyDeleteI really like how you thought about incorporating blogs into physical education. I love the idea how students can make suggestions on what they would like to do for warm-ups. What a great way to keep the students involved and feel as if they have a voice. Like Rich, I never really thought about putting videos on the blog, but I think that is a great way to showcase what is happening in your classes as well.
I do not know if you have this issue, but every year I have found I have at least one or two students in my class where the parents do not want their child's name or image available for the public to see on the Internet. I can see that this could be an issue when putting video on what you are doing in class on your blog. It might be difficult to make sure that select students are not on that video. How will you address this issue?
Great post with many fantastic ideas that I hope to integrate in my own classroom blog!

ReplyDeleteI think your idea of using blogs in your physical education classroom is a good idea. I especially like the idea of having pictures showcasing classroom activities and participation of those ideas. A lot of the times we are not aware of what goes on in a physical education classroom. Several people just believe that the students play, when their is so much more that goes on in the classroom.
What would you do if you do not have permission for a student to be in your pictures? Would you let that student help you with working behind the scenes?
